A little bit of context

RD company has two main drugstore brands: Droga Raia and Drogasil.

The physical drug stores are all over Brazil, with 4,400 stores located in 23 of the 26 Brazilian states. These stores are categorized as popular (in popular neighborhoods) and premium (in upscale neighborhoods), and both brands, Droga Raia and Drogasil, have their own apps.

In July 2023, Drogasil and Droga Raia had 11 million and 798 thousand registered people in their apps with the public varying from 18 to +90 years old.

For this case, we decided as a squad to do desk research using data from the market and benchmarking with drugstores from Brazil and all over the world to understand more about accessibility practices on the search journey. The improvements you see below!

We realized we were not providing alternative pathways for users to search for products other than typing. Medication names can be very complicated to write and remember, so, after desk research, we implemented the barcode search as an alternative way of searching.

Results

Analyzing one month of client use after implementing the feature (from October 11, 2023, to November 11, 2023), we got the following results:

Of the monthly barcode events converted to people's purchases = 486,003 barcode search usage events converted to purchases out of a total of 1.130.239 barcode usage events in the first month.

Of the monthly barcode events converted to people's purchases = 242.704 barcode search usage events converted to purchases out of a total of 542.261 barcode usage events in the first month.

Results

Analyzing one month of client use after implementing the feature (from October 11, 2023, to November 11, 2023), we got the following results:

Constraints I faced and lessons that I learned

Constraints I faced and lessons that I learned

I had a scenario I didn't foresee coming right after implementation: medicines can have difficult names to say and write, and the voice search listener doesn't correctly understand all the words people are saying.

So, I needed to do a manual treatment and correct the most popular terms people were searching by voice and were not receiving a return. It is a machine learning process that needs training, but it will work well after it.
